Nokia D1C is rumoured to be a mid-ranged device that will be offered in two variants, depending on memory and display size. A more recent leak also suggests that there may be another mid-level device tipped as Nokia E1. Meanwhile, HMD Global is also expected to unveil its flagship Nokia-branded smartphone at MWC 2017 which is rumoured to pack a Snapdragon 835 SoC, 6GB of RAM, and a 23-megapixel rear camera with Zeiss lens. Up until now, it was rumoured that at least three Nokia-branded Android devices will be unveiled at MWC 2017 in February targeting the entry-level, midrange, and high-end categories. A fresh rumour however suggests that HMD Global will come out with four more models in Q2 and Q3 of 2017, which includes a variant of the Nokia D1C. It looks like HMD Global wants to bring back the Nokia brand swiftly with a total of at least five smartphones now rumoured for 2017. Digitimes cites supply chain sources to claim the four new models will have display sizes ranging from 5 inches to 5.7 inches, at QHD or full-HD resolutions. The sources further added that LG Display, Century Technology (CTC), and Innolux will be supplying the panels for the upcoming phones with FIH Mobile serving as production partner.
Out of rumoured Nokia phones, the Nokia D1C has been the one that has garnered most interest and has been part of several leaks. A recent leak claimed that it will launch in two variants and will be priced at $150 (roughly Rs. 10,000) for the 2GB of RAM model and at $200 (roughly Rs. 13,500) for the 3GB of RAM model. Based on preliminary leaks, the Nokia D1C is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clocked at 1.4GHz coupled with Adreno 505 GPU, and would come in 2GB and 3GB RAM variants. It is said to run on Android 7.0 Nougat and come in 5-inch and 5.5-inch full-HD display options. Both the variants are likely to come with 16GB inbuilt storage. On the camera front, the Nokia D1C variants are said to be available in 13-megapixel and 16-megapixel rear camera modules. Both the variants are expected to sport 8-megapixel camera at the front. The Nokia D1C in September was listed on Geekbench that revealed some under the hood innards. Apart from the Nokia D1C, the company is also rumoured to be working on an entry-level Nokia Android phone, named Pixel, which is said to run on Android 7.0.1 Nougat. According to a leaked Geekbench listing, it is likely to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 SoC coupled with 1GB of RAM. The CPU is a dual-core variant at a clock speed of 1.19GHz. The entry-level Pixel Nokia phone is also said to support Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Under the tests run by Geekbench, the Nokia Pixel scored 404 on the single-core test while it resulted with 661 on the multi-core test. It is likely the name of this entry-level Nokia Android smartphone will change before being commercially launched. Apart from the rumoured Nokia D1C and Pixel, the Finland-based company is also expected to showcase a high-end Android smartphone at the MWC 2017. Based on preliminary leaks, the smartphone will feature a 5.2-inch or 5.5-inch screen size and sport 2K (QHD) display. It is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC. One of the highlight features of the upcoming high-end Nokia Android phone is said to be the Zeiss lens for the primary camera, something that has been seen on earlier Nokia devices. The Nokia Android phone is also rumoured to come with waterproof capability alongside sporting a metal unibody design. Nokia D1C pricing: $150 and $200:According to Nokia Power User, Nokia D1C will be available in two variants. One with 2GB RAM, 13MP main camera, and 5-inch display. Sources familiar with the matter told the publication that the 5-inch model would be priced at $150 while its bigger sibling would cost $200. Nokia Power User added that the price leak does not come from their usual sources, so it should be taken with skepticism. The report added that both models will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and Adreno 505 GPU. Both D1C phones are said to come with Android 7.0 Nougat, 16GB of built-in storage, and 8MP front camera.
Foxconn to make Nokia-branded smartphones:Nokia’s comeback will be spearheaded by HMD Global. HMD has signed a 10-year licensing deal to sell Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. The iconic Finnish company’s feature phones still popular in several countries. HMD will take over Nokia’s feature phone business. Unlike other smartphone startups, HMD has many things going in its favor such as Nokia brand, an experienced management team, and Foxconn as a manufacturing partner. Though the Nokia D1C is a mid-range phone, HMD Global CEO Arto Nummela said in an interview with the Economic Times that the company will introduce devices at a “wide range of price points” and it won’t exclude any customer segment. Launching a mid-rage device means the company’s profit margins would be low in the beginning.
Nokia D1C likely to be unveiled at MWC:HMD Global plans to convince the owners of Nokia feature phones to upgrade to its Android devices in markets like India, Russia, and Indonesia. India will be a key market for Nokia’s next phase of the journey, said Nummela. Nokia accounts for about 10% of all feature phones sold worldwide, though it has ceded some market share to Samsung, TCL, and other smaller players. Nokia D1C is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The MWC will be held between February 27 and March 2, 2017. HMD Global has confirmed its presence at the MWC. Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri is also scheduled to speak at the MWC, which indicates that the Nokia-branded Android smartphone is just a few months away.
